Notice it is never triumph vs BMW or Suzuki vs Moto Guzzi. It is always Harley vs everything else.
There are alot of reasons Harly thebike, Harleythe marketing campaign, andHarley Guy, attracts the disdain, ridicule, animosity, andalso just good natured ribbing. Harleythebike is dollar for dollar, pound for pound, cc for cc, easily the worst bikeyou can buy. Get out the spread sheets andtheharley is just embarrassing next to a modern bike or even aharley clone. It is a chrome slathered reproduction of a long outdated design. Harleythe marketing campaign. They don’t sell motorcycles, they sell a dream, a lifestyle, a status symbol. All smoke andmirrors. But harley is the top selling bike in the USA. Worst bike, highest price, best selling. Simply genius. Harley guy. Ok, these guys are dumb enough to buy into all the hype and pay premium prices for a POS bike. Most are middle aged noob riders, who really do believe they have bought their way into elite status. They really do think theharley has awesome power comperable to none, and have no idea the loud mufflers sit behind the lowest horsepower powerplants in production. They think they are proud individualists, but look at 500 black harleys parked on a street, with fat middle aged identically dressed riders milling about andit becomes obvious that you are lookingat herd animals. It’s an endless debate, seems you have picked the tougher side to defend, gotta respecta guy for that.
What the heck does Bart look like that Harleydealers are so mean to him? The local harley mega store here hires hot young chicks who couldn’t be nicer.

I started out with my Harleyand never thought of anothermotorcycle when I got it. Then, I opened my eyes and realized that my Harley was incredibly over priced andtheperformance was bad. MY FXDLI doesnt want to go above 70mph comfortably, without over revving the engine, is terrible on thehighway, at high speed and all the expensive chrome is pitting and rusting after 6 years of ownership. I have a lot of cash in my bikeand completely take care of it. My Hayabusa hasnt needed a damned thing since I got itand all I put on it are slip ons and radar detector – it was also1/3 of the price and will completely out perform it in every way possible.
So, in answer to your question, I think many people have come to realize that Harley is an old mans bike that has attracted the young mans eye due to marketing. Aside from image, I dont think Harley has much to offer and people keep buying them. I know MANY people who ride all kinds of bikesand have several mechanicfriends. The ones I give most credit to are the mecahnics because they slam Harley hard and laugh atHarley owners. My one neighbor is pushing 70 and raced motorcycles years ago. He has been dealing with bikes for almost 60 years and restores old bikes. I told him about my bikeand he laughed. He said “Harleys are just a bit faster than an old milk truck and may have a slightly better break down rate”.
I didnt start out insulting HD or their owners but several people immediately attacked me for asking questions. It is those types of people that are truly ignorant to the differences of HD and all other motorcycles.
Good Question
Mister Licious said in October 26th, 2009 at 6:03 am
Jealousy, pure and simple — although not always of themachine itself. People who ride a metric cruiser, for example, are often asked “is itaHarley?” by people who don’t own or ride motorcycles. This creates an attitude of “no, it isn’t…and I don’t want one of those anyways.”
Incidentally, Harley-Davidson makes cruisers. H-D puts more technology in their cruisers than any of theJapanese brands put in thier cruisers (fly-by-wire throttle, fourth generation closed loop EFI, Brembo sourced ABS brakes, Harmon-Kardon CD/stereo etc). That being said, they aren’t (and never will) make a four-cylindersupersport designed for the race track first andthe street second – so it’s not really an accurate comparison.
Furthermore, I had more mechanical issues with my Honda’s than I have had with my Harley-Davidson’s or my Triumphs (both with similar “hatred” on forums such as this). Am I saying that Honda is a bad brand? Absolutely not – just that YMMV.

You tell me. I was on a ride yesterday and I counted thebikes in my group. (PGR) There were 5 metrics and 25 Harleys. I talked to probably an easy half of the riders over the hour or two we were staging. I only met a couple that wouldn’t talk to a metric rider. I rode beside aHarleyand behind a Honda sports bike. I was leading anotherHarleyandaKawasaki Vulcan, the last two bikes were aHarleyanda Suzuki Boulevard. Bringing up the rear was a Trike (name brand) with a VW engine. All the lead bikes were (as far as I could tell because I didn’t inventory the whole ride) Harley Davidson. I rode with them in respect of a fallen soldierandthe fact that this group doesn’t care what you ride or what your political beliefs are. It is all about respect of our fallen soldiers and their families. Everyone in the group had respect for the other rider also.
True there are trolls here (and they know who they are) that have an excellent imagination, and they pose asHarley riders, then somewhere else on the board they ride a sports bikeand race every week. Next they will tell you how they pass people on the back wheel at 100mph. Next they claim to be instructors for MSF? TROLLS!!!!! Two things to remember………..if it don’t make any sense, it is a lie, and if it sounds too good to be true, it is a lie.
Might I suggest that those who want to ride andatthe same time get to know interesting people, take a look at this web site? I honestly believeit is a good cause and I will ride with them again (unlike some other groups that have invited me along).http://www.patriotguard.org/Home/tabid/5…

I can see why Bart S picks on them. Also, HD is an easy target. Every twenty years they update an outdated engine. The clamshell riding position is ridiculous. The idiots pull thebaffles out of their mufflers. 20k buys an anachronism that you are expected to invest another 20k into. Less than half the Jap engine will match it for torque and double it for HP. People are buying into an image. The great bikes of the past were Triumphand Indian, HD just has great marketing. The list goes on.

I normally do not get involved in these “Hate Harley” – “Hate everybody else” stand-offs. but this is a good one. I started riding in 1952, a 1942 HD 45. Next was an Indian Chief. Then a couple of other Harleys, then Triumphs for several years. Was drafted in 1956, went to Germany in mid 1957, first day on base, found a Vincent Black Prince for sale, owner was getting out. Bought it, put 20K miles on it in a little over a year, shipped it home when I got out, destroyed thetransmission on the first ride after gettingit home. Rode/sold Triumph for a few years, then got involves with Kawasaki. Had aTriumph dealer ship from 1960 to 1965, sold it, then Kawasaki 1970s to 1984. I worked full time for a large company, was in the shop evenings and weekends, had full time help during the week. Looked like every time I got the shop going good, I would get moved. Moved to Europe mid 1980s. Back in 1989, retired in 1991, have operatedthe shop full time since. The shop is amotorcyclemachine shop, I repair all brands, Right now, have a 2002 HD Twin Cam,. 116 ci, with 4 valve heads I am sorting out for a chap, a Yamaha R6 with blown gear box, anda bunch of many other assorted bikes waiting, They all have good points, all have bad points, all in all, today, no one brand is better or worse than any other. (Afraid you can not say that about some older bikes.) Everyone is welcome, the coffee pot is always on. I can point out problems with most any brand, if you come in knocking Harleys, or any other, youare asked to can it, or leave.
So, just let each one ride what he will, No one has any right to to talk down any other person or his ride. Lets enjoy the ride, andthe fellowship.

Harley makes the best Harleys in the world. If it’s what you want, it’s what you want. The trouble is that nobody wants to look at things from both sides. A lot of people buyaHarley, andassume that it is the end-all and be-all of motorcycling, and some of them do this in a very arrogant way.
I bought a 2005 1200 SportsterRoadster, because I was so impressed by my 2003 Buell Lightning. It didn’t take me very long to decide that it was not thebike for me. I sold it to a guy who now really enjoys it. I’m glad I bought it, becauseit gave me the opportunity to try the cruising end of motorcycling, but I discovered that it just wasn’t for me. It’s pretty ignorant of people to bash something when they haven’t tried it. For now, I’ll stick to my 4 Buells, 1 BMW and 1 Honda, but down the road…you never know…the V-Rod Muscle looks pretty interesting…

Theanswer is actually very simple, childishness. Plain and simple childishness. Regardless of how old these people are chronologically, they’re acting like little kids fighting over toy blocks and these people need to grow up.
My friendsand I did the exact same thing…except that was when we were in grade school! We went round and round about which truck was better, Ford, Dodge or Chevy, which tractor was better, Oliver, John Deere, International or Allis Chalmers, which seed corn brand was better, Trojan, Ainsworth, Pioneer, DeKalb and so on. We were all friends but were always going round and round about something that one had that was better than the others. Heck, one time it was even round bales vs square bales!
Sure, there are a few immature adult HD riders that act the same way about other brands, but a lot fewer than the other way around. This is probably because most HD owners are older adults and not pimply faced adolescents who haven’t yet acquired any common sense. Andas to Bart’s comments, I’m probably one of the very few people who has ever come to his defense. However, if he actually has had such bad experiences at HD dealerships, then he either visited adealership with some real A-holes (certainly possible but unlikely) or he broughtit on himself (more likely). I’ve parked my Jap bike in front of many HD shops and have always found the salesmen and staff friendly and helpful. ANY business that treats potential customers like cr@p are either idiots or have a very good reason to. Asa final note, many Americans here forget that the US is a land where we have freedom of choice. That’s theindividual’s choice and not what some other dumba$$ says no matter how much smarter they think they are (ha!). Instead of pounding on HDs, why not pound on the Amish. I can’t speak for others, I can only speak for myself, I have a legitimate reason to hate HD’s.
From the HD Dealers ignoring me , making fun of me and laughing at me and publicly embarrassing me when i walk into any dealership to the owners of HD’s that feel they are too good for you, to be your friend just becauseyou own a ride a non HD Motorcycle, and to the HD Riders who have to show off in front of their girlfriends by pulling a gun on andrunning non HD bikes off the road, andanother HD rider ripping off an American Flag of the back of a non HD bike owned by a war veteran! according to HD riders its an insult for you to display an American Flag on aJapanesebike.
NO, I am not saying all HD Riders are bad and all rice rocket riders are good.
but when good HD riders get together with bad HD riders they have to pretend to be bad too just to impress everybody, so that makes them fakes! Even when you good HD Riders watch some innocent rice rocket rider get forced off the road, I know you have some compassion and feel sorry for that rice rocket rider, but, your too afraid to speak up and say so!
oh yea, ha ha ha give me a “thumbs down” cause I am giving a truth full answer, ha ha ha

It’s not worth getting all worked up about.
just a bunch of ignorant idiots. And by the way I own and ride BOTH H.D. and jap bikes. ALL bikes and ALL cars will brake down. If it has breasts or wheels it will give you problems! [sorry girls]
Harley’s are the most over priced peace’s of junk you can buy!
Very simple. Harleys used to be a cool bike owned by individuals who simply loved to be different. Now, Harleys are overpriced status symbols owned mainly by snobs. The other well kept secret is that they are basically not very dependable and the parts and maintenance cost is ridiculous.
I can’t speak for others, I can only speak for myself, I have a legitimate reason to hate HD’s.
From the HD Dealers ignoring me , making fun of me and laughing at me and publicly embarrassing me when i walk into any dealership to the owners of HD’s that feel they are too good for you, to be your friend just because you own a ride a non HD Motorcycle, and to the HD Riders who have to show off in front of their girlfriends by pulling a gun on and running non HD bikes off the road, and another HD rider ripping off an American Flag of the back of a non HD bike owned by a war veteran! according to HD riders its an insult for you to display an American Flag on a Japanese bike.
