Mercury, the only metal element that is liquid at standard room temperature, is notoriously hard to handle – in more ways than one. The slippery stuff put General Motors in an awkward position, but the company (or at least the entity that controls its old assets) is taking at least temporary responsibility for what could otherwise be an environmental embarrassment.
